Hi there,

I’d like to do something different and address you directly while writing this. Personal connections are few and far between these days, so I hope this helps us connect a little more than what would otherwise be some boring marketing copy.

Let’s keep this one real.

I’m sure you’re wondering how I was able to land a billionaire as a student. I can’t tell you exactly how that happened, but I can tell you that much of it had to do with my experience in Hamburg, Germany.

I earned my CELTA in Hamburg. And I immediately started servicing government and corporate contracts at some fairly impressive places.

I trained the copywriters and creatives at advertising powerhouse DDB, and professionals at logistics beast HHLA. DDB Worldwide ranked 1st in the 2023 D&AD Annual Agency Network rankings.

And HHLA handles so much cargo that if they were to stop, commerce in Germany would be crippled, and its economy would likely collapse.

One of the government contracts I serviced was Hamburg’s transportation authority, Hochbahn. But the biggest was Germany’s central bank, The Deutsche Bundesbank. This notch on my resume is likely what landed me the gig with the billionaire.

After an incredibly successful run in Germany, my wife and I moved to Japan, which would be my second stint.

I immediately started two separate gigs, developing teaching materials for Fortune 500 companies like Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Pfizer, Ricoh, and more in the Tokyo area, and teaching Japanese professionals, including government officials and diplomats.

As a designer by trade, I couldn’t bring myself to use the commonly available English training materials on the market today, so I started making my own. That eventually turned into Lingualab.io, a self-study reading and listening SaaS business – something I had to teach myself how to build.

I also have a business English newsletter called The Executive Advisor, which I curate once a week. It’s great for quick reading and listening practice focused on real-world English, not useless textbook English.

My goal is to build Lingualab into a B2B white-labeled training solution and B2C self-study SaaS while releasing materials modern professionals can use.

I believe today’s learner has outgrown the materials available to them and I intend to fill that hole with modern, relevant, transformative materials suited for a modern business professional and the way we all learn today.

Q and A

Did you really give these lessons to a billionaire?

Yes. During our second or third meeting, I realized he loved the psychology-based discussions. So, I started crafting his lessons to suit situations he was either currently in or appeared to be heading for.

How did you get interested in psycholinguistics?

I’ve always been interested in psychology. But I read David Ogilvy’s book, Ogilvy on Advertising, around 2015 and it really piqued my interest. After reading that, I consumed everything I could about copywriting. Shortly after that, I started training creatives and copywriters at DDB Hamburg, so naturally, much of our time together was focused on influence and persuasion. Since then, psychology has been an integral part of my training and materials.

Is there an audiobook as well?

Yes. I’ve played guitar for most of my life and built my own home studio, so I was equipped to record the audiobook on my own. It will definitely benefit readers to listen to the audio while reading.

The cover says you gave the lessons to executives and directors as well.

Yes, my billionaire student received them first. They were then put through multiple revisions while given to executives and directors at some of the world’s largest companies.

Why did you decide to release this collection of lessons?

This particular student and I became friends. During dinner at his house one night, he told me that I was the “greatest teacher.” At the time, I just smiled and said “Thank you.” I didn’t realize what had transpired until later when I realized that if I can bring so much value into his life, that I can do the same for so many others.

I heard you designed the cover and laid out the book on your own.

That’s true. I’ve spent 25 years doing design and production artwork in the apparel licensing industry in addition to nearly 10 years as an educator. I spent six years co-developing and designing custom English learning books and materials for Fortune 500 companies in Tokyo. So, I did everything: the cover, layout, copy editing, website, mockups, you name it.

What makes Lessons for a Billionaire unique?

The lessons are all based on psychological principles. Nearly all English textbooks are based on grammar or phrases; they teach what words mean. Lessons for a Billionaire teaches what words do. It’s vital for today’s modern professional to know how their words influence others. That’s really what business is – communicating to reach an objective. Lessons for a Billionaire teaches that.

Do you have any other books or materials to share?

Yes. At the time I started Billionaire, I was already working on a textbook for practical discussions. I expect that to be done mid- to late-2025. I’m currently about five lessons deep into the second Billionaire book. I have a focused reading and listening web app called Lingualab.io that teaches real-world English in context, which is live but in a very young stage. And I curate a weekly newsletter called The Executive Advisor that English learners can subscribe to for free.
